After the singles semifinal, Safina still had to play doubles, which was moved indoors to the adjacent Jarry Tennis Centre.
Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany downed Safina and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 6-2, 6-2.
Black and Groenefeld advanced to the final Monday against tennis legend Martina Navratilova of the United States and Nadia Petrova of Russia. Navratilova is to retire after the U.S. Open.
Safina and Chakvetadze each earned $50,600 US for reaching the semifinals, while Safina and Srebotnik split $27,210 for making the doubles semis.
It's been an eventful week for Safina.
News that her brother, tennis star Marat Safin, suffered a suspected concussion in a car crash in Cincinnati on Thursday didn't faze her in a quick win over Nicole Pratt in the quarter-finals.
She is also playing without her coach Glen Schaap, who was suspended two weeks by the WTA at last week's even in Los Angeles after an altercation with another coach. Schaap was already on probation for a similar incident at the Australian Open in January.
WTA Tour spokeswoman Isabelle Hodge denied a report that Schaap was involved in a fistfight, saying there was "no physical altercation."
